3D printing refers to the technology used to create 3D objects in the real world from digital 3D files. The objects are typically created layer by layer using a 3D printer. There are two main types of 3D printers available on the commercial market, FDM and resin printers.

3D printers work by interpreting a 3D file and recreating its design one layer at a time using filament or resin. Most 3D models need to be prepped for printing in a process called slicing. Once the 3D model is "sliced" it can be printed on a machine.

FDM 3D printing

FDM printers use spools of material called filament. The filament can be made from a range of plastics from PLA and PETG to ABS. 

FDM prints are generally stronger than 3D resin prints. Specifically, the tensile strength of FDM prints ranges from 38-64MPa, while those of resins are generally lower at 23-55Mpa. Also, FDM prints have higher flexural strengths at 2.1-7.6GPa, while resins only average at 60.6MPa, this means that they are more than perfect for practical use.

Resin-based 3D printing

Resin-based printers typically use liquid resins, like photopolymer resin for UV curing. To learn more about resin (SLA) printing.

It's true that most standard resins are relatively brittle compared to other 3D printing materials and aren't recommended for stressed parts or outdoor use, although there are tough and durable resins on the market specifically formulated for stronger applications, and they can be really strong. Nevertheless, this material is the most precise and we advise it for aesthetic uses.

Black Pigeon will not provide a warranty over:

Products that are damaged by the customer or by wrong handling of the product. Products that are shipped to a different delivery address, only if Black Pigeon shipped it to the address that is registered on Form Data.
